How Can You Make a Difference?
Sometimes it can feel overwhelming to look at the world around us. We might feel drawn to just ignore those things that don't fit our vision of what the world should be like. At OSLC, we try to provide some opportunities that allow you to work in the community to start making a difference. We approach this in two ways: social change through volunteer work at a variety of local and global organizations AND social change through thinking about how we use our money and how that impacts the world. Read below for the opportunities to participate.
Ongoing Activities
Join the Quilters to help Lutheran World Relief!
Would you like to learn how to tie a quilt? The lovely OSLC quilters have invited us to help create beautiful quilts like those you've seen in the sanctuary - quilts that will be donated to Lutheran World Relief or gifted to OSLC's graduating seniors. No special skills are required and all ages are welcome! Wel meet on Sundays following the worship service in Oakview 1. Feel free to be in touch with Chrissy (youthandfamilies@oslc.net), Jennifer (jennifer.spahr@gmail.com) or Roberta (RKKlaproth@gmail.com) for more information. Hope to see you there! (Special thanks to Roberta for the quilting tutorial!)
Working for Social Change Through Our Action
In a world with too much individualism and alienation, consumerism, violence, gaps in wealth and power, and with unformed religious beliefs, we envision a world of community, responsibility, peace, tenderness, tolerance, and love. Help us make that world blossom to life.
The church's Mission Outreach Team facilitates your participation in volunteer activities, helping community organizations serve those who need help in our area and around the world. We invite new ideas about worthy projects and volunteer opportunities.

Action in Our Community
Adopt-a-Family | Select a pre-screened needy family, gather gifts, and make Christmas season a time to share, through Contra Costa Interfaith Housing and Bay Area Crisis Nursery.
Cook up a storm each week to provide food relief for the county's poorest families.
Multi-Faith ACTION Coalition |
Become involved with a multi-faith organization working to address the root causes of poverty through advocacy and public policy change, in areas such as housing, employment, education, and food security. |
|
Project Peace Days of Service | Volunteers choose a local community site and contribute "sweat equity" - working with their hands, heart, and sweat - to meet the site's needs for three hours on a Saturday morning.
Winter Nights Shelter |
Join in a week of hosting the homeless by setting-up the temporary facility in a local church, helping the children with their homework, preparing and serving a meal to those who are working to keep their families together and to achieve a brighter future. |
Action Around The World
Support Mayan girls' education in Guatemala, hone up on your Spanish skills, purchase products to support fundraising efforts, and get educated on justice issues that affect so many lives. |
|
Enjoy the great concerts by singers from Tanzania who tour the United States to raise money for youth education, school buildings, and summer camps. |
|
Craft quilts to be distributed by Lutheran international relief agencies to refugees, victims of disaster, and other people in need of a warm and caring gift at times of loss and hopelessness. A quilt can be a clean new bed cover or a baby cover, a market display spread, a sack for transporting goods to market, a sunshade, a shawl, comforting someone you have never met, but a reminder that someone, far away, cares. |
|
Join one of our cultural immersion trips each year to our mission partner in Mexico, where we undertake construction projects and share the fellowship and joy of supporting the Rancho's education, boarding and vocational learning center for 135 children and youth, many with special needs. |
