Seniors' Ministry

Seniors' Ministry at OSLC is broad and varied. We're always looking for ways to expand our activities to reach more people. We serve folks who are 55+ years of age —offering opportunities for fun, fellowship, spiritual growth, and service. The cornerstone of our Seniors' Ministry is the OWLS (Older, Wiser, LutheranS). Our members are involved in all kinds of wonderful ministries and service projects that share the Good News of God's Love in Jesus Christ—some of which are described below. I invite you to join us!

Monthly Fellowship Luncheons

The OWLS meet in the Chapel on the first Wednesday of each month at 11:00 AM for worship with communion, a homily by a Pastor, a planned program with speakers, movies, musical presentations, etc., and a delicious luncheon. This is a great time to meet new friends and visit with old ones. Watch for announcements of upcoming programs. No reservations are necessary and there is no charge (a free-will offering is taken to cover expenses).

Church Office

The backbone of our office is our crew of volunteers almost all of whom are seniors. Whether you can spare a couple of hours a month, a morning once a week, or an occasional day, we can use your help! Assistance is needed assembling the Spirit, answering phones, helping put together the directory or annual report, or getting a mailing out. You will be blessed by the fellowship of working with other volunteers. You might even catch yourself having fun! Watch the Spirit for needs as they come up or call the office! Rancho Santa Marta

Many active "55 pluses" travel to the orphanage at Rancho Santa Marta, Mexico, each Fall for 6 days to visit the ranch and help with various projects, involving building, painting, sewing, or cleaning. There is always plenty of time for fellowship, eating out in Ensenada or a near-by-town, and enjoying interaction with the many children and programs at the ranch. Watch for further trips. We guarantee that you will enjoy the camaraderie of this rich experience. Contacts: Nancy and Dick Anderson 925-283-8342

Friends Outside

This dedicated group of Seniors meets once a week in Martinez to support the necessary contact between people serving prison terms and their families and friends on the "outside." These angels in "Margaret's Army" sort and make packets of greeting cards for distribution to prisoners, and collect, sort and distribute food, clothing, school gear, etc. for families of prisoners. One of our Seniors regularly transports the bicycles to Marsh Creek where the prisoners repair and give them to needy children. Please bring your donations of food, clothing, and blank greeting cards for the baskets in the church lounge.Contact: Helen Seim at 933-0566

Senior Helpline Services

A number of our seniors volunteer at the Senior Helpine Services. They have honed their listening skills to counsel in crisis and to supply appropriate community referral services when necessary. They make one call per day to check in on their "client," a person confined mainly to their home because of age or disability, through this Reassurance Program, lifting their spirits and easing concerns of loved ones who live elsewhere. This could be a volunteer opportunity for those of you with limited mobility. Give Ann a call. Contact: Ann Watkins 925-284-5158
